چکیده

[1] Several lines of evidence, including remote triggering of earthquakes and modulation of seismic tremor by Earth tides, suggest that faults weakenwhen subject to shaking and dynamic stresses associatedwith the passage of seismic waves. However, the origin of such dynamic weakening is poorly understood. Here we explore the role of acoustic resonance for dynamic fault weakening using laboratory measurements. Experiments were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar assembly, with dynamic stressing via impact loading. Samples were composed of crushed rock particles from mine tailings with a particle size distribution similar to that found in a natural fault gouge. We used pulse-shaper techniques and carefully evaluated dynamic stresses recorded at the front and rear of the sample to ensure that dynamic force balance was satisfied. Our experiments document acoustic-induced fluidization and dramatic dynamic weakening. Frictional strength and elastic modulus of a simulated fault gouge are reduced by a factor of 5–10 via acoustic fluidization. We find a threshold acoustic pressure for fluidization that varies systematically with gouge zone properties. Our observations could help explain dynamic fault weakening and triggering of earthquake fault slip by dynamic stressing.

Dynamic Weakening by Acoustic Fluidization during Stick-Slip Motion.

The unexpected weakness of some faults has been attributed to the emergence of acoustic waves that promote failure by reducing the confining pressure through a mechanism known as acoustic fluidization, also proposed to explain earthquake remote triggering. Here we validate this mechanism via the numerical investigation of a granular fault model system. We find that the stick-slip dynamics is af...

Shear strain localization in elastodynamic rupture simulations

We study strain localization as an enhanced velocity weakening mechanism on earthquake faults. Fault friction is modeled using Shear Transformation Zone (STZ) Theory, a microscopic physical model for non-affine rearrangements in granular fault gouge. STZ Theory is implemented in spring slider and dynamic rupture models of faults. We compare dynamic shear localization to deformation that is unif...

Laboratory-derived Friction Laws and Their Application to Seismic Faulting

This paper reviews rock friction and the frictional properties of earthquake faults. The basis for rateand state-dependent friction laws is reviewed. The friction state variable is discussed, including its interpretation as a measure of average asperity contact time and porosity within granular fault gouge. Data are summarized showing that friction evolves even during truly stationary contact, ...

Nonlinear dynamical triggering of slow slip on simulated earthquake faults with implications to Earth

[1] Among the most fascinating, recent discoveries in seismology are the phenomena of dynamically triggered fault slip, including earthquakes, tremor, slow and silent slip—during which little seismic energy is radiated—and low frequency earthquakes. Dynamic triggering refers to the initiation of fault slip by a transient deformation perturbation, most often in the form of passing seismic waves....

Dynamic Fault Weakening and Strengthening by Gouge Compaction and Dilatancy in a Fluid-Saturated Fault Zone

Triaxial experiments show that samples of fault gouge deform distinctly differently than those from the adjacent fault damage zone (e.g., Chester and Logan, 1986). Rock samples in the damage zone follow a characteristic elastic-brittle behavior, whereas fault gouge readily compacts and deforms in a more ductile manner. In order to explain the apparent weakness of large plate bounding faults suc...
